Project Brief:
A family inherited a 70-year-old mansion in Mysuru that had been closed for years. The roof leaked, the timber was weathered and the garden was overgrown, but the arches, stone floors and carved woodwork were still beautiful.
Challenge:
Hotel rooms need bathrooms, air conditioning and fire safety systems, none of which existed in the original building. Adding them without damaging the historic fabric was the main difficulty.
Design Approach:
Document first. We began with a full survey: measured drawings, photographs of every room, and a study of materials and damage. This showed which elements were original, which were later additions, and where the building was failing.
Outcome:
The hotel opened after 20 months and has become a destination in its own right. It also shows that a historic building can earn its keep without losing what makes it special.
